Travel Makeover: Free and Cheap Places to See in New York City

Congratulations on making it to New York! This is an easy, fun adventure to experience! I would love to hear about what hotels and restaurants you had a good time at, what the highlight of the day was, and if anything in particular stands out. Also, what activities would you recommend?

Thanks to New York’s history of exploration and settlement, museums are a great way to learn about the city. Most major museums — the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rockefeller Center, the USS Intrepid Museum — are accessible from the airport, but some, like the Statue of Liberty and the Guggenheim, require you to go up or down through some tunnels. Admission to most museums is free to everyone, but some, like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Holocaust Museum, have hefty admission fees.

The new Freedom Tower is the tallest building on the West Side of Manhattan, and it’s still undergoing renovations. Expect delays. When it opens, you’ll be able to see the Statue of Liberty from the observation deck. The Brooklyn Bridge, Staten Island Ferry, and Empire State Building also make for great views.
