A man was arrested by Toronto police this week after investigators found hundreds of photos and videos of child pornography on a laptop and an iPhone he used to conduct his sexual assaults of children.
The unidentified male, who was identified by the Toronto Sun as a 49-year-old from North York, is facing dozens of charges, including five counts of sexual assault, seven counts of distributing child pornography and other charges.
The evidence seized in the investigation included approximately 300 pornographic images and videos of children aged between one and five-years-old.
An investigation into the suspect began in March, when law enforcement was alerted to suspicions that the suspect may have committed a sexual assault against a child who was younger than 11. He was then placed under a terrorism warrant by the Toronto police – a standard process in which a citizen who may be involved in terrorism offences or concerns are put in contact with authorities.
Officials said the suspect believed the girl he committed the offence against was aged 12 or older.
The suspect was identified as the suspect by officers, who also found the suspect’s cellphone in a backpack he had left at a downtown hotel. The phone contained approximately 1,000 photos and videos of child pornography.
Investigators also went through the suspect’s laptop, which was taken to police headquarters and used for a forensic examination, with the help of the NSA. The files found on the laptop and the accompanying iPhone included images and videos of up to 100 children in sexually graphic poses.
The suspect was allegedly involved in a string of sexual assaults on at least two children, but investigators say it is likely he committed several other assaults on children.
Investigators from the Toronto police’s major crimes and cyber-crime units worked with Ontario’s child protection agency, Peel regional police and the RCMP to arrest the suspect. Police say they were investigating possible allegations of sexual assaults in other cities, but would not confirm which ones.
The suspect will be formally charged at a later date.
