One man is dead and four others are injured, two seriously, after being shot by Israeli police in Jerusalem.

A Palestinian man shot at a crowd before being shot dead himself near a military post in the occupied West Bank on Monday.

The incident happened as the Palestinian Authority launches its term of office in the occupied city.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is visiting Palestinian areas of East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

His term in office was not due to end until April 2021.

PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet had been briefed on the situation prior to him flying to France for a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday.

Israel’s police spokeswoman said the incident was a “lone act of terrorism” and that no-one else was involved.

The injured men are in hospital, where two are in a serious condition and another two are in a “stable condition”, said a police spokeswoman.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the dead man as Ibrahim Siam, 19, from a village close to Hebron.

Two of the injured men were police officers and one was an Israeli conscript, Israeli police said. They were not shot at the location.

It was not immediately clear why the man opened fire at soldiers on the spot. An earlier report from AFP news agency said the assailant had been trying to enter the city from the West Bank town of Bethlehem.

A Palestinian gunman killed four people at a bus stop in Jerusalem on 27 April last year.

Israel responded by killing at least 200 Palestinians and seizing hundreds of others.

Since then, violence has flared. Israel and the Palestinian Authority have started peace talks but no agreement has been reached.

Almost two years ago, Palestinians began repeatedly throwing rocks and firebombs at Israeli soldiers and civilians, in a tactic known as “price tag”.

In a major escalation in March 2017, at least 120 Palestinians, six Israelis and an American student were killed by Israeli fire.

Israeli settlement construction has continued.
